Youth Learn-to-Sail Program

This is an introductory course in sailing designed for kids who:

  • Are 8-14 years old
  • Are able swimmers - there will be a swimming test the first day of class
  • Have an interest in learning to sail

The program is designed to teach:

  • Sailing terminology
  • Knot tying
  • Parts and rigging of Optimist sailboats
  • Launching and beaching
  • Points of sail
  • Self confidence in sailing by themselves in an Opti


  • 8-14 years of age
  • Able to swim
  • Closed-toe shoes with rubber soles
  • A change of dry clothes
  • Sunscreen
  • Registration and Safety Deposit forms

Classes are limited to 10 students to allow each student access to his/her own Optimist sailboat for instruction on the water. Classes will be given by a US Sailing certified instructor and one assistant. Emphasis will be on safety, fun and learning! Parent support is greatly appreciated.

Youth Level II Program

This class is designed for students who have already taken the Youth Learn-to-Sail Program and continues the instruction with more emphasis on improved boat handling of an Optimist and an introduction to racing. Class will be 15-18 hours of instruction.

Class Hours: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Boats Used for Class: Sunfish

Fees: Club Members and Hollywood residents - $120.00; Non-residents - $175.00 Class Fee includes two free boat rental days.

Class Size: (4) people minimum, maximum (10).

Registration: Saturdays at Sailor's Point from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, or email us for mailing address. Due to the minimum class size, all registrations must be turned in (1) WEEK prior to class start date. Please fill out this form

Cancelations: A 50% fee applies to any cancelation within (1) WEEK of the class start date.

Boat Rental Fees (after class taken): Non-members - $20.00/day; Members - $5.00/day

Club Membership: (not required) $140.00/$100.00 - first year/renewal. With class $100.00/$100.00 first year/renewal.

Able to swim; Closed toed shoes (rubber soles); Sun screen & water

Directions to Sailor's Point:

Take I-95 to Sheridan
Go East on Sheridan to US 1
Turn Right (South) on US 1 to Johnson (large intersection with traffic light)
Turn Left (East) on Johnson and go through the 4-way stop sign
Turn Right (South) on 12th
At North Northlake Drive turn Left (East)
At the dead end, turn Right (South) and go through the gates directly ahead
