GSC Ocean Race 1, 12-7-25

A day that will go down in infamy, but fun

The first winter GSC race Sunday off of Port Everglades started with very light air. It was from the East about 3-6 K, so we delayed the start until the wind came up but not very much.

The race included 4 of the club's boats. Second Mates, captained by Bruce Schwartz, with a crew of Oz Ertekin, Bill Blakey, Micky Micky. Fareaway captained by Mike Dillon and crewed by Twila Day, Zepher II captained by Bob Schudy and crewed by Liz Watson, Ruslan and Carl. Monuana, captained by Hunter Quackenbush and crewed by Paul Jehlens, Luis Olivera, Diane Akey.

Hunter on Manauna got his boat out on the water and into his first GSC race after extensive overhauls and looked great (see photo below). Mike Dillon on his lightweight racer was way ahead throw-out the race but we will see the impact of the Handicaps to the final results. Bob on Zepher II, sailed a great race after his 2hr journey from Hollandale to get out into the ocean. Second Mates (photo above) sailed well and loved when the wind finally come up (we started fishing for a while waiting for the wind- did not ketch anything)

Our patience was rewarded by very pleasant sailing conditions. Four boats raced and everyone had a wonderful time. We'll send the results when we've completed the handicap calculations.

The course was :

a. Start and finish will be a line between the #3 green and #2 Red Port everglades channel buoys. Line up the green and Red buoys and cross at the start time to the East.

b. The East mark will be the PE buoy (final Port everglades channel buoy – Red and White). Take this to starboard.

c. The South mark will be a virtual mark 200 yards off of Dania Pier. You must line up the pier with the beam of the boat.

d. The finish Line is the same as the start line finishing West.
